The first annual 'Baristas on a Mission' challenge was held in the Queen Street Mall on Thursday, July 12 2007. Stephan joined with Brisbane's best baristas, television personality Taryn Onofaro, sporting heroes Clark Keating (Brisbane Lions), Michael Kasprowicz (Queensland Bulls) and Channel 7 personalities Sofie Formica and Richard Champion to help raise funds for the national charity Mission Australia.
For more than 140 years, Mission Australia has helped the nation's most disadvantaged people get back on their feet. All money raised went to Mission Australia's Cafe One on Wickham which is a low cost meal service for those who are homeless or in great need.
Only at an event such as the Ekka which brings together a diverse range of people from different backgrounds, would it be possible to hear the national anthem and the popular “I Still Call Australia Home” being delivered by someone with a South African accent. However, Stephan considers himself very much an Australian after having migrated here three years ago.
Each night of the Ekka, riding on the back of a horse drawn wagon, Stephan started the evening program in the main arena with the national anthem to a background of fireworks exploding. He then went on to sing "I Still Call Australia Home".
