SOUTH AFRICAN TENOR CALLS AUSTRALIA HOME

The national anthem is heard and fireworks explode at the beginning of the evening program in the main arena each night of the Ekka. For the person behind the beautiful tenor vocals, this event has a special meaning. Stephan Potgieter is proud to consider himself an Australian after having migrated here three years ago.

Only at an event such as the Ekka which brings together a diverse range of people from different backgrounds, would it be possible to hear the national anthem and the popular “I Still Call Australia Home” being delivered by someone with a South African accent. However, Stephan considers himself very much an Australian. “I am very proud to have become an Australian and to share my love for this country by singing the national anthem to such a receptive audience,” said Stephan Potgieter. “I particularly like how Australians have been so open and welcoming. I feel very lucky to have the opportunity to call this country home.”

His musical journey started when he sang his first church solo at five years of age. Fuelled by his mother’s passion for Classical music, Stephan went on to study music at university level and took master classes under world class professors. In South Africa he has been broadcast on national radio and toured, performing for audiences of up to 20,000 people.

Since migrating to Australia in 2004, Stephan has a growing reputation as an exceptional soloist who has performed in many concerts and special events. This tenor has performed in several charity events for organizations such as Mission Australia and a number of seniors’ organisations. He has now recorded three full-length albums – “Amigos Para Siempre (Friends For Life)”, “He Was There All The Time” and “Everlasting Light”.
